Diri directs relevant officials to Implement safety laws on waterways.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has again directed all government officials and security agencies to ensure that all laws pertaining the safety in the waterways are implemented.
Governor Diri gave the directive while presiding over the state executive council meeting in Government house, Yenagoa.
He said the directive was part of government deliberate plans to avert further loss of lives and properties along the the waterways.
The State chief executive, who condoled with the deceased families and those who lost their properties following the boat mishap along the Nembe/Brass road, warned boat operators again overloading.
Governor Diri, hinted that the unfortunate incident underscored the importance of constructing the Nembe-Brass road in order to avert further boat mishap in the waterways.
The State helmsman, called on the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to work hand in glove with the state officials in securing lives and properties in the waterways.
Governor Diri, also directed all the security agencies to ensure that state and federal government laws governing the waterways transportation are implemented.
His words” As a marine operator, you know what is right and what is wrong; part of the reports I have received so far, is that the boat was overloaded; how do we overload a boat in our waterways and that every minor thing will lead to what we have seen; leading to loss of lives and millions of naira.”
“We must be a people of character, we also have a duty as owners of these boats, as operators of these to ensure safety of lives and properties.”
“Again, I called on all government officials security and ministry to ensure that relevant laws pertaining to safety are implemented; we can continue to have people’s’ lives being wasted.”
