NPFL Promotion: Diri redeems N10 mln promise to Bayelsa United. •••Approves annual football fiesta.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has redeemed the ten million naira, promised to the state- owned football team, Bayelsa United Football Club, after gaining promotion into the Nigerian professional football league.



Recall that Bayelsa United had defeated Cynosure of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State 2-0 on Saturday at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa to secure the team’s promotion back to the elite league seven years after dropping out of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

Speaking at a dinner in honor of the management and players of the Club at the Golden Tulip, Onopa in Yenagoa, Governor Diri, expressed delight that after several close attempts, the club eventually gained the much-sought promotion to the NPFL.

His words; In appreciation of all that you have also put in, the N10 million naira I promised you is here cash. I like to say that this is the time for you to also take stock, and I'm sure that you will go back to the drawing board and think of how you will conquer Nigeria in the next football season. Let me also appreciate all Bayelsans for their support for our darling club, because when they heard the team was back in the premier league, everyone was so happy."

Describing sports as a veritable tool for youth development, the governor also described the club gaining promotion into the top elite as a new dawn and charged them to conquer the country in the next football season.

Sports is a veritable tool for youth development, and we all know that football is like the king of sports. This is the beginning of a new dawn in your football, and we want to signpost you to win the Nigerian Professional Football League, so that you will represent this country on the African continent. 

Now, you are in the elite division, and to whom much is given, much is expected. Everything that will motivate you was given, and you reciprocated by making the people and government of Bayelsa State happy by gaining promotion to the elite division.”

The governor, who said he felt elated with the team’s achievement, approved an annual football fiesta aimed at consolidating the state football comparative advantage as well as serve as a breeding ground to groom young talents.

He said his administration’s investment in sports and human capacity development was no fluke as evident in the performance and achievements of the state in sports in the last two years.

According to him, stressed that the investments were geared toward positively engaging youths of the state and urged them to take advantage of the numerous opportunities created by the government.

Describing motivation as a driving force for greater productivity, the State helmsman, also announced upward review of player’s’ match bonus to spur them to do more.

Governor Diri, who to joined Bayelsans in congratulating Bayelsa United for making the State proud by gaining into the elite division of the Nigeria Professional Football League, charged them to bring the glory to the state.

"I like to join all Bayelsans to congratulate you, and welcome you to the elite division of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)”

Other dignitaries at the event were, Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Dr. Fred Agbedi and Fred Obua both of the National Assembly, member of State House Committee on Sports, Timi Agala-Omubo, President of Azikel Groups of company, Dr. Azibuapu Eruani.
